Overview of Representation Languages for ECAs

چکیده

Agents may be decomposed roughly into two main parts: the body and the mind. The body performs the animation. It may be 2D, 3D, cartoon-like, realistic... It may be based on MPEG-4 standard; it may follow H-Anim specification; its animation may come from motion capture, dynamic system or key-frames. The mind is responsible for the reasoning, the planning, the perception of the world it is placed in as well as of the user(s) or agent(s) it is talking to. The mind has to perceive and understand what is being said and what are the events happening in the world. It has to generate what to say and how to say it; it should also know how to react to the events, to trigger emotions or actions to undertake... Moreover, the mind reflects the personality and the identity factors of the agent. This report does not deal either with the body part, or with the mind part; it does not deal either from the input side (perception and understanding) or from the output side (generation and animation). This report aims at making the link between the body and the mind of the agent; this link may be achieved by developing a representation language that specifies the agent’s behaviours. Such a language serves as interface between the different modules of the architecture of an agent system. Moreover, the languages are used to control the animation of agents as well as they are used as a synchronization scheme between modalities. The languages may embed various levels of abstraction: ranging from the description of the signals (a smile, a head nod) to semantic information (rheme / theme, iconic), going through communicative function (performative, emotion) and syntactic function (question, statement).

Identity and Representation through Language in Ghana: The Postcolonial Self and the Other

Research related to colonialism and post colonialism shows how the identities of indigenous people were constructed and how these identities are reconstructed in our contemporary world. The thrust of this paper is that colonialism brought a shift in the linguistic structure of Ghana with the introduction of the use of English among Ghanaians. The coexistence of both Ghanaian languages and Engli...

TOPOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION FOR FUZZY REGULAR LANGUAGES

We present a topological characterization for fuzzy regular languages: we show that there is a bijective correspondence between fuzzy regular languages and the set of all clopen fuzzy subsets with finite image in the induced fuzzy topological space of Stone space (Profinite space), and then we give a representation of closed fuzzy subsets in the induced fuzzy topological space via fuzzy regular...

Visual Representation of Social Actors in ELT Nursery Rhymes

With the advent of globalization, especially in its third phase (see Robertson, 2003), global relations of domination have undermined abuse of power at national and local levels (Fairclough, 2001). Global ELT textbooks, as corollaries of the globalization process, are not immune to the embedment of discriminatory discourses, as various studies have shown (see for example, Gray, 2010, 2012; Baba...

Automorphisms of Transition Graphs for Elementary Cellular Automata

The transition graph of a cellular automaton (CA) is a graphical representation of the CA’s global dynamics. Studying automorphisms of transition graphs allows us to identify symmetries in this global dynamics. We conduct a computational study of numbers of automorphisms for the elementary cellular automata (ECAs) on finite lattices. The ECAs are partitioned into three classes, depending on how...

The EVENTS Approach to Rapid Prototyping forEmbedded Control Systems

This paper presents a prototyping system for embedded control applications (ECAs) which is currently being developed at the Computer Architecture group of the University of Oldenburg. Part of this system is a hardware architecture which acts as a target for prototyping and uses multithreaded processors to aim at those ECAs that require fast reaction to external events (i.e. sensor input). The o...

Mental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
